HATHAWAY SR. -- of New Bedford, February 18, 1999, Joseph E., 73, husband of the late Mary T. (Toomey) Hathaway, father of Joseph E. Hathaway Jr., James W. Hathaway, Michael J. Hathaway and Janice M. Hathaway-Riley, brother of Louis Hathaway, Robert Hathaway, Ruth Heron and Florence Carreau. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the SAUNDERS-DWYER HOME FOR FUNERALS, 495 Park St., New Bedford Monday at 11. Visiting hours Saturday and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9. Interment Rural Cemetery.
He lived all of his life in New Bedford. In addition to his service as a fire fighter, he was a well-known carpenter and contracter in the New Bedford area. He was a candidate for city assessor four times in muncipal elections between 1967 and 1973. A member of Fort Phoenix Post 2892, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Fairhaven, he was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Sixth Bristol Club and the Massachusetts Police Chief Associations. He was a Mason and a Shriner.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Died at home of his daughter in westerly RI after a long ilness.
