Notes for Aquila Chase


Birth: Sep. 26, 1652 Death: Jul. 29, 1720 Sergeant Aquila was born in Newbury (now known as Newbury Port), Massachusetts, the son of Aquila Chase (Sr.) and Ann Wheeler. Sgt. Aquila and his six sisters and four brothers were of the first generation of Chase's to be born in the United States, as their father, Aquila Chase, Sr., and his Brother Thomas were born in England, are believed to be the first Chase's to immigrate to America. Sgt. Aquila married Esther Bond (dau. of John Bond and Esther Blakeley) in 1673 in Newbury, where they raised nine children: Esther, b. 1674, Joseph, b. 1677, Anne, b. 1679, Priscilla, b. 1681, Rebecca, b. 1684, Jemina, b. about 1687, Hannah, b. 1689, Abigail, b. about 1690, and Benjamin, b. about 1692. He was a farmer and inherited his father's homestead on North Atkinson St. in Newbury Port. He was chosen to be a "fence viewer" (town official who administered fence laws and settled property line disputes) at the upper end of Newbury March 18, 1683/4 and took the oath of allegiance in 1678. He was a member of the town committee Dec. 12, 1702, and a soldier under the command of Capt. Thomas Noyes in 1688. Later he was sergeant of that company. He also owned many acres of salt marsh by the Plum Island River which was known as "Chase Island". Sgt. Aquila Chase died 29 July, 1729, in Newbury, MA.
