Notes for Abraham Hathaway


Abraham was a blacksmith, ferryman across the Taunton River, Deacon of South Congregational Church, and spent most of his life on a farm. For 35 years he served as Town Clerk of Taunton, and was one of the finest penmen of colonial New England. He served in King Philip's War in Capt. Daniel Henchman's Co. in the July attack on Mt. Hope.

As a soldier in King Phillips war he served in Capt. Daniel Henchman's Co. July attack on Mt. Hope. The following year under Capt. Samuel Wadsworth. Member of the militia 8 April in King William's war, 1691, under Capt. Thomas Leonard; and 1st military co. of Taunton 4th squadron of Taunton. Son Abraham as heir in 1737 received land in Narragansett, Township #4 later Greenwich, Mass. now under the Quabbli Reservoir, for that service. Ref. History of Dighton PP 25,37,39, 62; N.E.H.G.R. 1725, On 16 Nov. 1725 Abraham, Thomas, Samuel, John, and Elizer, children of Abraham quit claim to Ebenezer and the heirs of Shadrack, dec. his purchase right in the township of Taunton. Will dated 8 Aug 1725 [Taunton 5--256] mentions all children except Shadrack who had died. He was married to Rebecca WILBOR (daughter of Shadrach WILBOR [WILBORE] and Mary DEAN [DEANE]) on 28 Aug 1684 in Taunton, Bristol, Mass. 2nd husband.


Abraham and Rebecca had 9 children.
